So what are the responsibilities of a District Judge?

The 80th District includes both Clare and Gladwin counties. The District Judge is a non-partisan position elected by the residents of both counties for a six-year term. The following types of matters are handled in the District Court:

  • All civil disputes up to $25,000.00
  • All felony matters begin in District Court
  • Misdemeanors
  • Landlord-Tenant
  • Land Contract Forfeitures
  • Collection matters
  • Civil Infractions
  • Traffic violations
  • DNR violations
  • Small claim actions
  • Probation violations

The 80th  District Court is made up of one judge, one court reporter, one magistrate in each county, one probation officer in each county with support staff and court clerks with specialized knowledge in the areas listed above.
